Alappuzha
[Alleppey] is known as the "Venice
of the East" because of the
presence of the canals within the town and the proximity of
lakes. Alappuzha is a district of immense natural beauty,
referred to as the Venice
of the East by travelers from
across the world;
it is famous for its boat races, backwater holidays, beaches,
marine products and coir industry. Alappuzha beach is a popular
picnic spot.
The district has no forest area to its credit and its 82km
seashore constitutes 13.9 per cent of the state's seashore. This
natural beauty is an ideal headquarters of Kerala backwaters
touring. Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala is in Alappuzha
district
is one of the few places in the world where farming is done
below sea level.
The total
production of rice here is almost ten percent of the total
production of the State. Almost 80 per cent of the coir
factories in the State are in this district.
The smallest
district of Kerala, Alappuzha is also the most density-populated
district in Kerala.
