ALAPPUZHA - Venice of the East

Alappuzha [Alleppey] is known as the "Venice of the East" because of the presence of the canals within the town and the proximity of lakes. Alappuzha is a district of immense natural beauty, referred to as the Venice of the East by travelers from across the world; it is famous for its boat races, backwater holidays, beaches, marine products and coir industry. Alappuzha beach is a popular picnic spot. The district has no forest area to its credit and its 82km seashore constitutes 13.9 per cent of the state's seashore. This natural beauty is an ideal headquarters of Kerala backwaters touring. Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala is in Alappuzha district is one of the few places in the world where farming is done below sea level.

 The total production of rice here is almost ten percent of the total production of the State. Almost 80 per cent of the coir factories in the State are in this district.

The smallest district of Kerala, Alappuzha is also the most density-populated district in Kerala.

Boat Services: Boat services available through the backwaters to Kollam, Changanassery, Kottayam, Kochi, Kumarakom, Chengannur etc. Although the time taken by boat is more but it is an enchanting experience!

Krishnapuram Palace

krishnapuram palaceThe double-storeyed palace situated 47 km from Alappuzha, built by Raja Marthanda Varma. This palace at Karthikapally in Kayamkulam is famous for its mural depicting the story of 'Gajendramoksham'. It measures14 feet by 11 feet and is at the western end of the ground floor, a walking distance from the Palace Pool. Dating back to the 18th century, this exquisite piece of art is one of the largest murals in Kerala.

Pathiramanal

pathiramanalThis is a small beautiful island in the Vembanad Lake and it is the first island resort of the State. This little island is a favourite haunt of hundreds of rare migratory birds from different parts of the world; The Island is accessible only by boat from Kumarakom and Muhamma.

 

Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple

 Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple is located at 15 km south of Alappuzha, which was built, in the typical Kerala architectural style. It is also called the Dwaraka of the South. The oldest temple is famous all over India for the Palpayasam, - a sweet milk porridge offered to the diety. It is also in this temple that Pallipana is performed by Velans (sorcerers) once in every twelve years. Paintings of the Dashavatharam (the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu) are on display on the inner walls of the Chuttambalam. Ottanthullal, a satiric art form originated by the poet Kunchan Nambiar, was first performed on the premises of this temple, that in the 16th century. Its main festival is celebrated during March/April. 

Karumadikuttan

karumadikuttanA black granite statue of Lord Buddha called Karumadikuttan in the11th century, is located at 3km east of Ambalapuzha, It is very interesting for the tourists.  

 

 


Punnapra Vayalar

A short distance from Alappuzha is Punnapra, is famous for the Punnapra Vylar riots between the communists and Sir. C.P. Ramaswami Iyer's State forces in 1946.

Chavara Bhavan

Chavara Bhavan is the ancestral home of the blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara, which is 6 km from Alappuzha, accessible only by boat. It is now a holy shrine and spiritual resort where thousands of devotees gather for prayer receive favours and feel ample gratified. Here, a 250-year-old historically important beacon of light is preserved intact in its original and primitive form.

Arthunkal

arthunkalThe Arthunkal St. Sebastian's Church is an important Christian pilgrim center, which is located 22 km north of Alappuzha. The famous “Arthunkal Perunal” the feast of the patron saint, is held in January every year.

Edathua Church

The famous South Indian Pilgrim center, Edathua 'St. George Church' is situated 24 km away from Alappuzha, on the Alappuzha - Thiruvalla Road. Established in 1810.  This church is dedicated to St. George, and the church is famous for healing of various mental disorders and other ailments. The annual feast is held from 5-7th May.

Mannarasala

The famous Mannarassala temple devoted to the serpent deity is a rare phenomenon of worship. The Ayilyam festival held in November every year is very famous. This temple is situated near Harippad, 32 km south of Alappuzha.

Chettikulangara

Chettikulangara Bhagavathy temple is famous of the Kettukazhcha festival attracting large number of devotees. The colour full Festival held during Feb/March.
