
Thrissur
(earlier Trichur), the name is
derived from a combination of Malayalam words Tiru-Siva-Peroor,
which collectively means the city bearing the holy name of Lord
Shiva. Thrissur is known as the cultural capital of Kerala. The
Kerala Kalamandalam, Kerala Sahithya Academy, Kerala Lalithakala
Academy and Kerala Sangeetha Nadaka Academy are situated in
Thrissur district. The Kerala Kalamandalam Kathakali Training
Center at Cheruthuruthy is of wide reputed. The other dance
forms like, Mohiniyattom, Thullal etc. are also taught here.Raja
Rama Varma popularly known as
Sakthan Thampuran was the architect of the present Thrissur
town. He ascended the throne in 1790. The Zamorians of Calicut
captured Cochin State in the 15th Century and the later by Tipu
Sultan in the 18th Century.
The Vadakkunnathan Temple, where the reigning deity is Lord
Shiva, is on a hillock in the heart of the town. Magnificent
murals here explain the epic of the Mahabharata. This temple is
famous for its spectacular celebration of the Pooram festival.
Which is celebrated in April-May every year. This is a mammoth
spectacle with arrays of thirty caparisoned elephants bedecked
with gold ornaments. Three matouts holding objects symbolizing
Royalty - the ‘Alavattom, Venchamaram and Muthukkuda’, ride each
elephant. The beats of drums and cymbals -Chenda Melam adds
spice to the festival.
The Vadakkumnatha temple, Zoo, Museum and
Archeological
Museum are attractions in the city. The famous waterfalls
Athirapally and vazhachal are
situated in Thrissur district.
