Thrissur

Thrissur

Thrissur (earlier Trichur), the name is derived from a combination of Malayalam words Tiru-Siva-Peroor, which collectively means the city bearing the holy name of Lord Shiva. Thrissur is known as the cultural capital of Kerala. The Kerala Kalamandalam, Kerala Sahithya Academy, Kerala Lalithakala Academy and Kerala Sangeetha Nadaka Academy are situated in Thrissur district. The Kerala Kalamandalam Kathakali Training Center at Cheruthuruthy is of wide reputed. The other dance forms like, Mohiniyattom, Thullal etc. are also taught here.Raja Rama Varma popularly known as Sakthan Thampuran was the architect of the present Thrissur town. He ascended the throne in 1790. The Zamorians of Calicut captured Cochin State in the 15th Century and the later by Tipu Sultan in the 18th Century. The Vadakkunnathan Temple, where the reigning deity is Lord Shiva, is on a hillock in the heart of the town. Magnificent murals here explain the epic of the Mahabharata. This temple is famous for its spectacular celebration of the Pooram festival. Which is celebrated in April-May every year. This is a mammoth spectacle with arrays of thirty caparisoned elephants bedecked with gold ornaments. Three matouts holding objects symbolizing Royalty - the ‘Alavattom, Venchamaram and Muthukkuda’, ride each elephant. The beats of drums and cymbals -Chenda Melam adds spice to the festival. The Vadakkumnatha temple, Zoo, Museum and Archeological Museum are attractions in the city. The famous waterfalls Athirapally and vazhachal are situated in Thrissur district.
