Thodupuzha is a beautiful town situated in the valley of high
range. This shining place comes under the Idukki district of the
state of kerala. Thodupuzha is also the major commercial center
of Idukki District. This picturesque town situated on the banks
of the
Thodupuzha
River.
The word Thodupuzha is derived from two Malayalam words, “Thodu”
means “canal” and “puzha” means "river”. Another version is that
Thodu means river which makes it a place that touches a river.
People of Thodupuzha are good hardworking in nature. Most
peoples are living in rural areas. The standard of living of the
people is not poor. They where lives in good houses. They have
enough water and road facility, people coming from different
part of the state for educational, economical and commercial
purpose. Number of educational institutions such as schools
colleges, technical institutions etc. are in the city. Peoples
are belonging to different religious. The church, temple and
mosque are tells the peaceful atmosphere of that place.
Main occupation of the people in Thodupuzha is agriculture .The
soil of these places is fertile for cultivating Rubber, Ginger,
Pepper, Coffee, Coconut, Pineapple, Tapioca etc. This has
enabled them to live. The farmers share their achievements to
their society.
The place has its own history, which can be
traced to 1000 A.D. It has so many interested places such as
ancient places of religious worship of different religion. Many
churches and temple has got its traditions above 500 yrs. The
St. Mary’s church at Nediyasala, which is 6 k.m. from Thodupuzha
was established in A.D. 999. And chunkom St.Mary’s church was
established in A.D.1579. In 300.B.C the Buddhist and
Jain religious, which made their first inroads in Kerala
Buddhist religious relics found at Karikodu is ample proof
of this surmise. For administrative purpose erstwhile Kerala was
divided into several provinces are Venad, Odanadu, Nanvushainadu,
Munjanadu, Vembolinadu and Keezhmalainadu. Thodupuzha and
Muvattupuzha were in keezhmalainadu was existence till 1600.A.D.
In that year it lost a battle with Vadakkum coor and became part
of it. The kings of Vadakkum coor used to live at Karikodu for
several years. At the time of king Marthanda varma, vadakkum
coor became a part of the state of Travancore. The relics of a
fort are still there at Karikkodu.
