
Kasaragode, the
northernmost district of Kerala is world renowned for its coir
and handloom industries. Fishing is a prime source of
livelihood. Kasaragode is known as the land of gods, forts,
rivers, hills and serene beaches. The fort at Bekal is the
largest and best preserved in the State.
The coastal
regions abound in coconut and areca nut gardens while the
midlands have extensive paddy fields.
It is the only district in Kerala, which grows tobacco and also
the largest producer of areca nut.
Flanked by the forest-covered Western Ghats in the east, Arabian
Sea in the west, Talappadi and Trikaripur, demarcating the north
and south. Kasaragod displays a variety of styles in temple
architecture - the unique style of the Madhur Mahaganapathy
Temple, the typical Kerala style of the historic Malik Deenar
Great Juma Masjid and so on speak volumes about the rich
cultural heritage of the region. Spectacular pageants of Theyyam,
Yakshagana, Kumbla (buffalo race), Poorakkali, Kolkali etc.
fascinate the visitors. The district was formed in 24th
may 1984.
Before the formation of Kerala, a
section of the district was with South Canara of Karnataka.
The district headquarters is located 20 km. north of Bekal and
47 km. south of Mangalore in
Karnataka State. The kasargode
fort spreading in an area of five acres which is believed to
have been built by Shivappa Naik of the Ikkeri dynasty in 17th
century.
