Kasaragod

Kasaragod

Kasaragode, the northernmost district of Kerala is world renowned for its coir and handloom industries. Fishing is a prime source of livelihood. Kasaragode is known as the land of gods, forts, rivers, hills and serene beaches. The fort at Bekal is the largest and best preserved in the State. The coastal regions abound in coconut and areca nut gardens while the midlands have extensive paddy fields. It is the only district in Kerala, which grows tobacco and also the largest producer of areca nut.

Flanked by the forest-covered Western Ghats in the east, Arabian Sea in the west, Talappadi and Trikaripur, demarcating the north and south. Kasaragod displays a variety of styles in temple architecture - the unique style of the Madhur Mahaganapathy Temple, the typical Kerala style of the historic Malik Deenar Great Juma Masjid and so on speak volumes about the rich cultural heritage of the region. Spectacular pageants of Theyyam, Yakshagana, Kumbla (buffalo race), Poorakkali, Kolkali etc. fascinate the visitors. The district was formed in 24th may 1984. Before the formation of Kerala, a section of the district was with South Canara of Karnataka. The district headquarters is located 20 km. north of Bekal and 47 km. south of Mangalore in Karnataka State. The kasargode fort spreading in an area of five acres which is believed to have been built by Shivappa Naik of the Ikkeri dynasty in 17th century.
