Idukki

idukki

A landlocked district, Idukki is one of the most nature rich areas in this state of Kerala. District was formed on January 26, 1972. Its Head Quarters is Painavu. The word ‘Idukki’ derived from the Malayalam word ‘Idukku’ that means a gorge. The River Periyar and its tributaries, Thodupuzha and Pambar, mainly water the district. Idukki is the power center of Kerala, as it generates nearly 80% of the state's electricity. As a tourist destination, Idukki offers diverse attractions like wildlife sanctuaries, hill stations, spice plantation tours, mountain treks, elephant rides etc. Anamudi is the highest peak in the Western Ghats in Idukki district. The Idukki Arch Dam is the world's second and Asia's first arch dam, constructed across the Kuravan and Kurathi Hills. It is 650 ft in breadth and 550 ft in height, and lies close to the Cheruthoni barrage. The Idukki Wild-life sanctuary is adjacent to this world famous arch dam.
